The main focus of this story is Penelope, a sixty-something widower who has just discharged herself from hospital as the story opens, after a suspected mild heart attack.
Penelope's family is gradually introduced and woven together cleverly, with the past and the present intertwining. Each chapter leads neatly onto the next section, dealing with a different person.
There is a surprising climax; yet it is so peaceful (and with many preceding hints) that it is not shocking. The ending is neatly handled, and very satisfying.
Highly recommended.
