Lady of Quality (by Georgette Heyer)

'Lady of Quality' is an excellent historical novel by Georgette Heyer.

The main protagonist is Annis, a most independent young lady. She meets a runaway girl, and befriends her.

Annis is attracted, against her better judgement, to the girl's guardian, the somewhat unusual Oliver Carleton. Great characterisation, excellent writing. The usual sub-plots and excitement ensue, with a satisfying ending.

I had read this book several times before but, as ever, enjoyed it thoroughly.

A slightly longer review of 'Lady of Quality' can be found here, after a further re-reading some years later.
