Holding On (by Marcia Willett)

'Holding On' is a novel by Marcia Willett, the second in the 'Chadwick' series. It started with the moving 'Looking Forward', which introduced a recently orphaned young family. Fliss was the eldest child in that book; only ten years old but quite mature and responsible. They went to live with their grandmother Freddie.

This book moves us forward a long time. Freddie's grandchildren are now grown up. Fliss must go abroad with her rather insensitive husband. Her brother Mole is in the navy. And her younger sister Susanna falls in love.

Other children are introduced in this book, and adult life is well-portrayed through their eyes.

I thought it moving and realistic.  An excellent sequel, and highly recommended.

(For more information, there's a much longer review of 'Holding On' written in 2007 when I re-read it)
