Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (by Douglas Adams(

Douglas Adams was, of course, best known for his 'Hitchhiker's Guide' series of books, which have been dramatised and turned into films more than once.

But I hadn't previously read 'Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency', until I picked it up in an idle moment.

Like 'Hitchhiker' and its sequels, this is a bizarre mixture of genres: crime fiction, humour, fantasy... and more. I didn't really understand it, but perhaps I just wasn't in the right mood to enjoy it. It was well-written with some humorous asides, and evidently not to be taken too seriously.
