Tom is rather a boyish girl, raised by her father on maths and classics. She arrives at the Chalet School believing that most girls are sneaky and dishonourable. As she settles down, she has to revise some of her ideas.
It's not a bad book though rather obviously dated. On the other hand, there's nothing very exciting or out of the ordinary. It's important in the series as it introduces Tom, who reappears in many of the later books.
(I wrote another review of 'Tom Tackles the Chalet School' when I re-read it only a year later, having forgotten how recently I had read it.)
