The Root Cellar (by Janet Lunn)

The Root Cellar by Janet Lunn

I'd never heard of Janet Lunn. Apparently she is a Canadian writer. I don't even remember where we picked up this book. However, it seemed like a good one to read aloud to my young teenage sons.

The story of 'The Root Cellar' is about a girl called Rose. She is unhappy living with her aunt and uncle. She discovers a door that leads her to life in previous centuries, in the time of the American civil war. Lots of adventures ensue.

We thought the plot was very good, and that the people were realistic, even given the unexpected time-travel nature of the book. It is certainly an exciting book, with some surprises along the way.

Suitable for older children or teenagers. We thought it worked very well when read aloud.

Recommended.
