Judith is about twelve at the start of the story. Her mother and sister go abroad, leaving her in boarding school in the care of her aunt.
During the course of the book, she makes friends with people from a different sphere, grows up and falls in love, then does war work and suffers in many ways before settling down and finally having a home of her own.
A wonderful novel with delightful people. I've read this before but it's well worth re-reading every few years.
